1. Should I go to a salon for the hair system or do all the work by myself?
It's not a simple yes or no answer—it depends on a few factors.
If this is your first time wearing a hair system, we recommend visiting a salon for your initial installation and cut-in. This allows you to learn the entire process, from template creation and base sizing to installation and product use. An experienced stylist can ensure the hair system looks great on you, boosting your confidence in wearing it.
After the first installation, it's better to handle maintenance yourself. You'll need to learn these skills, as you can't always rely on a salon for minor issues that need quick fixes. Salons often require appointments, meaning you might have to wait several days for service.
Since you've chosen the journey of wearing a hair system, gaining the necessary skills will empower you to address any issues quickly and build your confidence. Doing the maintenance yourself will also save you money. Purchasing a hair system from TopUniqueHair already offers significant savings compared to other sources. We also provide a pre-styling service where, for a small fee of $42, we can cut the base to your size and style the hair to your desired look.
While the pre-styled system may not perfectly match your hair since it's cut on a mannequin head, there's a simple solution. After receiving the pre-styled system, if you find the hair length a bit too long or want adjustments, you can wear the system and visit any salon—not necessarily a specialized hair system salon—for minor tweaks. This adjustment will cost just a few bucks, similar to a regular haircut.
-
2.Can you feel the hair system on your head while wearing it?
When you first wear it, you might notice its presence and experience some occasional itching underneath. Tapping gently on the area where it itches can help alleviate the discomfort. However, after a few days of wearing it, you'll likely forget it's even there.
-
3.Can I swim while wearing a hair system?
Yes, you can swim while wearing it, but keep these tips in mind: Allow 24 hours for a fresh bond to fully cure before getting it wet. Ensure your bond isn't nearing the end of its typical lifespan (e.g., 2 weeks). For swimming, use the strongest bonding method. Many people have different bonding routines—opt for your most durable one when you plan to swim.
Before swimming, it's best to wet your hair with regular water first. This helps prevent the hair from absorbing pool water or seawater, which contain chlorine or salt that can cause dryness.
-
4.Can I exercise while wearing a hair system?
Yes, you can exercise while wearing it. As with swimming, ensure the bond is fully cured and not nearing the end of its lifespan. Additionally, a breathable hair system, such as a full lace, mono, or lace-skin hybrid, will make exercising more comfortable.
-
5. Can I sleep while wearing my hair system?
Yes, you can definitely sleep while wearing it. However, friction can cause tangles and shedding, so try to minimize it. Using a silk pillowcase is recommended to reduce friction and help protect your hair system while you sleep.
-
6. How long does a hair system last for?
There isn't a single answer, as it depends on various factors.
- Base Material of the Hair System: Generally, a silk base hair system is the most durable. However, be aware that it consists of three layers. When washing or getting the hair system wet during exercise, ensure that the base, particularly the middle layer, is completely dry. If it remains damp, it can loosen the hair knots, leading to shedding, and may also cause odor due to moisture and sweat. For durability, the order is as follows: Silk base, mono+skin hybrid, lace-skin hybrid, thick skin, full lace, and thin skin.
- How well you care for the hair system: An experienced wearer can significantly extend the lifespan of a hair system. For instance, one of our customers with nearly 10 years of experience has managed to make a 0.04mm super-thin skin hair system last over 6 months, despite its typical lifespan of around 2 months. With proper learning and practice, you can become an expert and care for your hair system with greater confidence.
-
7. How often should I wash my hair system?
For hair systems, less frequent washing is generally better. Unlike natural hair, these systems don’t accumulate oils quickly, so they don’t need to be washed as often. Additionally, washing can rapidly strip moisture from the hair, leading to dryness and a loss of that fresh, flowy look. Typically, washing once a week is advisable. However, if you don’t notice any odor or sweat heavily, washing every two weeks or even less may be preferable.
-
8. Can I get a hair system that matches my biological hair?
Yes! TopUniqueHair offers two methods for color matching. You can either purchase our color ring and match the hair color at home. Once you're done, return the color ring for a refund or apply the amount to your next order. If the color ring doesn't help you find a match, include a hair sample with the returned color ring, and we'll create a custom hair system in the same color for you.
-
9.Can I go out in direct sunlight with my hair system?
Yes, but keep in mind that exposure to sunlight can cause the hair color to fade over time. To help prevent color fading, we recommend using a color-depositing conditioner once a week.
-
10. How do I attach and remove the hair system?
A men's hair system can be attached using tapes, glues, or clips, with tapes and glues being the most common methods. Before applying the hair system, shave the area of hair loss, clean the scalp thoroughly to remove any dust or oil, ensuring a successful and long-lasting bond. For the tape method, apply tape to the base of the hair system first before attaching it to the scalp. For the glue method, apply glue to the scalp first and then place the hair system on top.
When removing the hair system, avoid pulling it off directly. Instead, use a solvent like Walker C22 to dissolve the adhesive, which helps protect both the hair system and your scalp.
-
11. Which base should I start with, lace or poly?
For someone new to hair systems, I recommend starting with a poly base. Here's why:
- Without prior experience, you might find a lace base challenging to work with, especially when applying tape. Some people struggle with getting the tape to adhere properly to lace. Additionally, removing and cleaning a lace base can be difficult because glue or tape residue can seep through the lace onto the hair side, making it hard to clean.
- Lace bases have knots that may be visible on areas of the base other than the front hairline. While the knots are small, they could be noticeable to some people, which might be a concern.
- When cleaning a lace base, you might find that some hair gets pulled through from the hair side to the base side, and it's not possible to push it back.
However, if you’re an experienced hair system wearer, these issues won’t be a problem for you.
Poly, on the other hand, is a solid base, making it a better option for beginners. The hair won't come through, and neither will the glue or tape residue, making it much easier to manage compared to lace. Just avoid starting with the thinnest 0.03mm skin, as it’s very delicate. A 0.04-0.06mm skin base is ideal for beginners (TUS02 with TopUnique Hair). It offers a comfortable fit, a natural-looking hairline and overall appearance, and is durable enough to be easy to work with, which will boost your confidence in wearing it.
-
12. What density should I get for my hair system?
When choosing the right hair density, there are a few factors to consider.
First, consider your age. It's important to select a density that complements your age. For example, if you're in your mid-30s to 40s, a light to medium density of around 90% to 100% would be more suitable. For those in their 50s or older, a lower density of 80% is generally more appropriate. If you're in your 20s or early 30s, a higher density of 115% to 130% would work well.
Second, keep in mind that stock hair systems come with specific hair densities. For instance, our TUL03 Swiss lace hair system has a 90% density, while the TUL02 hairpiece has a 100% density. If you prefer a specific base but aren’t satisfied with the default density, we can always place a custom order. With a custom order, we can tailor the base, size, hair density, color, length, and more to meet your specific requirements.
-
13. Can I color my hair system?
We advise against coloring your hair system, as it can damage the hair, leading to shedding or staining of the base. If you must color it, we recommend taking it to a professional with experience in coloring hair systems. Please note that the hair can only be dyed darker, not lighter. If you plan to color the hair, 613 platinum blonde is the best color to purchase. Additionally, the hair system hair cannot be bleached.
-
14. Do you offer a customization service?
Yes, we do. We offer a convenient individual service to create the most suitable hair system based on your specific needs. You can choose the hair material, color, texture, density, base construction, base size, base shape and hair direction of your hair system to make a perfect match. Whether it is for men, for women, short hair, long hair <= 24’’, single/mixed hair color, highlights, lowlights, Lace, skin, mono or combo bases, High density, low density, curly, wavy, straight, Indian hair, European hair, small size, big size or even a full cap wig.

1. What is a hair topper?
A hair topper is a hairpiece designed to cover thinning areas or add volume and length to existing hair. It's typically worn on the top of the head and blends with natural hair.
-
2.Who can benefit from using a hair topper?
Hair toppers are ideal for women experiencing thinning hair, hair loss, or those who want to add volume and length. They can also be used by individuals with full hair who simply want to enhance their style.
-
3.How do I secure a hair topper for all-day wear?
There are two types of hair toppers based on the bonding method: clip-on hair toppers and glue-on women’s hairpieces.
For clip-on hair toppers, you’ll need enough natural hair around the area of hair loss to secure the clips, ensuring the topper stays firmly in place. The main advantage of a clip-on topper is the ease with which you can remove and reattach it at any time. For instance, you can take it off before bed and clip it back on in the morning, making it a very convenient option.
On the other hand, a glue-on topper is ideal for those who prefer a more semi-permanent solution and don’t want to remove it frequently. This type of topper is bonded to your scalp using tapes or glue, providing a super secure attachment. With a glue-on topper, you won’t have to worry about it shifting or falling off, giving you the confidence that it feels like your own natural hair.
-
4.How do I choose the right hair topper for my needs?
Consider factors like hair type, color, length, density, and the area of coverage needed. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us at support@topuniquehair.com. We're here to guide you through every step of the process.
-
5.Are hair toppers available in different materials?
Yes, our hair toppers come in a variety of base materials such as lace, skin, mono, and silk, as well as different hair types like Chinese cuticle-aligned Remy human hair and Brazilian hair. If you're interested in other hair materials, like European or Indian hair, we offer custom order options. Please feel free to email us for more details.
-
6.Can I style my hair topper like my natural hair?
Yes, because all our hair toppers use 100% real human hair. You can perm it, straighten it and color it but we strongly recommend you take the hair topper to a professional who has experience with hair toppers to do this for you.
-
7.How do I attach a hair topper?
Hair toppers can be attached using clips, tape, or adhesive strips. The method depends on the design of the topper and personal preference. Some toppers come with built-in clips or combs for secure attachment.
-
8.Can I color or highlight a hair topper?
Human hair toppers can be dyed or highlighted, but it's best to have this done by a professional. Also if you plan to color or highlight the hair topper, pick the ones that are made of Chinese Cuticle-aligned remy human hair.
-
9.Can I swim or exercise while wearing a hair topper?
It's best to remove the topper before swimming or intense exercise to prevent damage and ensure proper hygiene. If you need to wear it during these activities, choose a secure attachment method and protect it as much as possible.

1. How do I apply a hair system and which products should I use?
Application contains three steps:
1.) Shaving and cleaning the bald area, 2.) Preparing your scalp and 3.) Applying the hair system.
Shave and Clean: You need to shave the area that you are going to cover with the hair system. After shaving, clean the scalp using water and then use 99% Isopropyl Alcohol to remove the skins oils.
Preparation: It is recommended to apply a layer of Walker Scalp Protector which creates a layer between your scalp and the glue or tape you are going to apply onto the scalp. A scalp protector will protect your scalp from irritation and can extend the bonding time.
Application: To apply, you need to establish whether to use glue or tape to bond the hair system to your head. To glue, if you would prefer to use a water-based glue, then Ghost Bond or Walker Great White are great products to use. If you would prefer a solvent based glue, then Walker Ultra hold glue is a good choice.
For tape, Walker ultra-hold tapes are recommended. You can purchase the contour shape one and the roll one at the same time. The contour shape works best for the hairline while the roll works well for elsewhere.
Before you try a new tape or glue, please do an allergy test before applying it onto your scalp.
-
2.How do I remove the hair system?
1)What’s the difference between removing a lace and a skin hair toupee?
A lace base has mesh while a skin base doesn’t. When you try to pull the tape from a lace hair system base, there is a chance that you might pull hair through from the other side which is not easy to get back.
The first step to removing a lace base is to spray lace release or any adhesive remover on and under the hair (while the system is still on your head) to the places where you know there is tape. By doing this, the adhesive remover will loosen the bond between the lace base and the tape. Also, we want the tape to stay on the head instead of getting stuck onto the lace base.
This step is exclusively for lace bases. For a skin base, read on and start from the next step.2) How to remove your hair system
It is easier to start removing your hair system from the back and not from the front hairline. It is also recommended to avoid pulling or stretching the base and to be gentle with it.
Step1: Firstly, locate the back edge. Find the center edge of your hair system. Once you find the edge, begin by gently separating the hair system from your own hair.
Step 2: Next, release the back edge as you gently pull the system's hair up. Spray a few pumps of adhesive remover under the back edge of the system. Make sure to spray upwards so it penetrates under the edge (this will begin to release the system from your scalp).
Step 3: After a few seconds gently tug on the hair system until it begins to release. Hold the edge of the base and begin to slowly lift it away from your scalp. Spray more adhesive remover under the base where necessary as you gently pull it away from your scalp. Repeat this process until the hair system is completely removed. Remember not to rush this process, if you do, it can irritate your skin and damage the base.
When you remove your hair system, make sure to use adhesive remover instead of peeling the base off directly because it might rip the base or hurt your scalp.
We always recommend conducting an allergy test before you spray the adhesive remover onto your scalp. To test for an allergy, spray a small amount of the adhesive remover onto the skin behind your ear to see whether there are any reactions. If your skin is fine after 15-20 minutes, then you can use it.
After the hair system is removed, use Professional hair lab Ultra Safe Adhesive Remover to remove the residue from your scalp and use Professional hair lab Ghost Buster to remove the adhesive from the base. -
3.How should I shampoo my hair system in the shower?
Step 1: Firstly, wet the hair like you would with your own hair.
Step 2: Next, pour a normal amount of shampoo into your hands and lather your hands until you see bubbles. Then work your hands into your natural hair and gently run them on top of the hair system.
Step 3: With the shampoo covering your entire hair system, pat it softly instead of rubbing it. You could also use a wide-tooth comb to comb the shampoo through your hair system.
Step 4: Lastly, rinse the shampoo out. Make sure you rinse the hair with the water running in the same direction to avoid tangling.
-
4. How should I clean the hair system after removal?
Step 1: Remove tape or glue residue
Firstly, you need to remove any tape and glue residue left over on the base. Here you will need your solvent and cotton balls. For places where the bond is still hard, spray the solvent onto it and let the bond break down. Then use a cotton ball to dab on places where there is glue residue. By doing this, the cotton will stick to the glue residue and then you just need to roll the cotton, so the glue residue will be removed with the cotton.Step 2: Comb the hair system using a bristle comb
After the glue residue has been removed effectively, wet the hair and use a bristle comb to comb through the hair gently. When you comb the hair, be sure to comb following the hair direction.Step 3: Shampoo the hair system
Pour some shampoo into your hands and then apply onto the hair system on the base and the hair side. When you lather the hair, slowly pat it on instead of rubbing the hair and try not to change the hair direction. For the base, rub gently with shampoo to let it easily work in.Step 4: Rinse the hair system
Next, use mildly warm water to rinse the hair system. When you rinse the hair system, let the base face the faucet and let the water run through it. On the hair side, let the water flow in the direction of the hair. When all the shampoo has been rinsed out, you can move on to the next step.Step 5: Condition the hair system and rinse again
Apply conditioner by gently applying it onto the hair. Avoid getting any conditioner onto the base as this will make the base slippery and can lead to a poor bond.
Let the conditioner sit on the hair for about 5 minutes and rinse the conditioner out.Step 6: Towel dry the hair system
Once the hair is clean, place the wet hair system onto a towel and then gently roll it up to let the towel absorb as much water as possible.Step 7: Blow dry the hair system
Then take your blow drier and put it on a low heat setting. Blow dry the base first if you are drying a lace base. You can skip this process if you are drying a full skin base.
Then pin the hair system onto a mannequin head and blow dry the hair in the style you want. -
5.Hair System Care Tips
Prevent Oxidation
UV rays can make your hair system turn orange or red in color. When you spend time outdoors or exercising, remember to wear a hat or use a UV protector to protect your hair system.Wash Your Hair System Correctly
You can wash your hair system while you are taking a shower but be gentle while washing. While you shampoo the hair system, instead of rubbing it like you would do with your own hair, pat it gently while working it into your scalp. Rinse your hair in the same direction to prevent tangles and breakage.Avoid Friction
Switch your pillowcase to a satin or silk pillowcase to greatly reduce the friction on your hair system and help keep the hair soft. Make sure to avoid excess brushing and combing which can also create friction. Appling a leave-in conditioner daily will protect the hair, as well as extend the lifespan of your hair system.Dry Your Hair System
Use a wide-tooth comb to comb the hair
Use a towel to absorb water and let the hair airdry or use a blow dryer on a low heat setting.
Avoid using hair products that contain alcohol
